Samsung renames 2nd-gen 3nm chip process to 2nm
In a surprising development, Samsung has renamed its second-generation 3nm chip process tech to 2nm.
According to ZDNET Korea, Samsung has changed the name of its 2nd generation 3nm process to 2nm. This means that the 2nd generation 3nm process, originally targeted for mass production this year, will now be called 2nm.
The South Korean tech giant has also notified its customers and partners since the beginning of this year that it will change the name of the 2nd generation 3nm process to 2nm, which has recently been officially confirmed.
A fabless industry source said, “We were informed by Samsung Electronics that the 2nd generation 3nm will be changed to 2nm. The contract that was signed with Samsung Electronics Foundry last year for the 2nd generation 3nm was also rewritten recently with the name changed to 2nm.”
Back in June 2022, Samsung began mass production of 3nm chips based on the Gate-All-Around process. However, chips using the 2nd generation 3nm process were planned to be mass produced this year, and 2nm process in 2025.
