Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra do not support wireless power sharing or old chargers

Published

By

Samsung’s newest Galaxy Watch7 series can’t be charged wirelessly from your phone anymore. This used to be possible with older Galaxy Watches thanks to a feature called “Wireless PowerShare.”

This feature lets your phone act like a wireless charging pad for your watch, which is great for emergencies, but it only works well with other Samsung devices.

Even older charging pads you might have won’t work perfectly. The new charger that comes with the Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra is the only one that will charge them as quickly as possible. Older chargers might still work, but it’ll take longer and the watch might feel warm while charging.

Here’s the official FAQ:

Q. The Wireless power sharing feature is not working on the Galaxy Watch7 / Watch7 Ultra.

A. The Galaxy Watch7 series has a new rear sensor design to improve sensor accuracy over previous models. As a result, it is possible to assess health-related data points that were not previously supported as well as take more reliable measurements during prolonged or specialized exercises.

However, the new sensor design required changing the shape of the back glass. The alteration increased the distance between the internal wireless charging coil of your Watch and the wireless charger, so the Wireless power sharing feature available on the previous model is no longer supported.

Q. When I charge my Galaxy Watch7 / Watch7 Ultra with my old wireless charger, the charging speed is slow.

A. The Galaxy Watch7 series has a new rear sensor design to improve sensor accuracy over previous models. As a result, it is possible to assess health-related data points that were not previously supported as well as take more reliable measurements during prolonged or specialized exercise.

However, the new sensor design required changing the shape of the back glass. The alteration increased the distance between the internal wireless charging coil of your Watch and the wireless charger, which may result in slower charging and higher heat generation.

To experience faster charging times, we recommend using the included wireless charger for the Galaxy Watch7 series (EP-OL300).

Google Pixel Watch 2

A mysterious Google smartwatch running Wear OS surfaced on FCC. Judging from the specs and model number, it is unlikely to be the Pixel Watch 3, scheduled to launch later this year. Is Google preparing to introduce a budget-friendly smartwatch, Pixel Watch 2a?

Google Pixel Watch 2a?

Starting with the Pixel 6a, Google has been bringing notable upgrades. The company is not only introducing innovative flagships every year but also upgrading its affordable model. This year’s Pixel 8a is said to offer a larger battery, 120Hz display, and faster charging support.

Pixel Watch 3 indeed coming later this year with many fruitful upgrades. However, an affordable Pixel Watch will help Google expand its presence among consumers. As the competition is getting fierce, the Pixel maker is also reshuffling its hardware product strategy.

If Google’s working on the Pixel Watch 2a (model number G4SKY), it should be available at aggressive pricing. The chipset used in the Watch 2 should be welcomed, while the original Watch’s chip is also impressive. The debut of the new Wear OS 5 iteration should also be kept in mind, matching Samsung.

Galaxy Watch FE

It is reported that Samsung is also developing a Galaxy Watch FE. The wearable could bring hardware from the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic and a new operating system. A chip used in the Watch 5 series is also expected to be bundled as part of utilizing the inventory.

Starting from smartphones, Samsung expanded its Fan Edition lineup to tablet and hearable segment. The company is also rumored to introduce its first affordable foldable phone this year under the FE lineup, followed by the next landing expected in the Watch lineup.
