Android 15 needs more storage for budget phones
Google is making a change with Android 15 to improve how budget phones work. Starting now, new Android devices must have at least 32GB of storage to run this version. This is double the old 16GB requirement from Android 13. The goal is to give users more space for apps and files, making phones feel smoother and less cramped.
Most modern phones already come with 128GB or more, so this rule mainly affects cheaper models. Some low-cost devices still use 16GB, but that’s often too small once the system takes up space. With 32GB, Google wants to ensure there’s enough room for updates and apps to run well.
This rule only applies to phones that want Google’s apps, like the Play Store. Manufacturers can still make 16GB phones without Google services, but those are rare. Also, 75% of the 32GB must be for user data, like photos and apps. This change should make budget phones better for everyone.
