Android 16 might let apps check your identity more easily

Google is working on a new feature in Android 16 that could make logging into apps faster and more secure. This feature is called “Identity Credential HAL”, and it lets apps check your identity using information already stored on your phone.

Right now, Android supports things like digital IDs and driver’s licenses. But with Android 16, apps could soon use these digital credentials to confirm who you are — with your permission, of course. For example, if an app needs to verify your age or identity, it could use this feature instead of asking you to scan a physical ID.

This system still keeps your data safe. It will only share the information that’s needed, and you’ll always be in control of what’s shared. Google is also working on expanding support to more types of ID and making sure it works across different devices.

Android 16 is still being tested, but if this feature rolls out, it could make digital ID checks quicker and easier in everyday apps.
