After a long series of leaks, Samsung finally introduced the latest Z-series, the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 devices. They’re more durable, lighter, and boast a few minor upgrades. Disappointingly, both models come with an increased price: the Galaxy Z Fold6 starts at a whopping $1,899, and the Z Flip 6 at $1,099.

Both phones have the latest super-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, made just for Samsung. They’ll also get software updates for 7 years, just like the latest Galaxy S24 series. Both of these devices are a bit stronger too, with a better hinge and screen that can handle drops better. They’re also water-resistant, but not dustproof. Even though the IP48 rating sounds better now, it only means they can handle splashes and bigger things, not tiny dust particles.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 brings the display size up to 6.3 inches from 6.2 inches (featured in previous foldable,) while keeping the high resolution and refresh rate (2376 x 968 and 120Hz). The inner display size remains 7.6 inches. Weight also sees a slight improvement, dropping from 253 grams to 239 grams. While the camera system on the Fold6 stays largely the same with a 50MP main sensor and 10MP 3x telephoto, the ultrawide sensor gets a bump to 12MP and promises better low-light performance.

Unlike the Z Fold6, the Galaxy Z Flip6 keeps the same 3.4-inch cover screen as its predecessor. There are some minor improvements with the cover screen: smarter reply suggestions, more widget options, and interactive wallpapers.

The device is also packed with some significant upgrades. It features a larger 4,000mAh battery, a first-ever vapor cooling chamber for the Flip series, and an upgrade to 12GB of RAM in the base model. Storage also starts at 512GB, a welcome change considering the price increase.

A new update for the Rich Communication Services (RCS) standard, Universal Profile 2.7, brings features that make messaging more interactive and flexible for both Android and iPhone users. This includes improvements to message replies, editing, and custom reactions.

To be specific, the update will allow users to edit or recall messages they have already sent. This can be helpful if you accidentally send a message with a typo or if you want to take back something you said.

It also standardizes how reactions are displayed in chats. You can now respond directly to a specific message and add emoji reactions (like thumbs up, laugh, etc.) to messages, just like you can do in other messaging apps.

Additionally, the update adds the ability to report other users for spam. This allows users to report other users as spammers for fraud, inappropriate content, or other inappropriate behavior.

Google’s Gemini is going great and in the I/O 2024, Google has already revealed some new interesting features for AI lovers. At the I/O 2024 conference, Google unveiled new AI models – Gemini 1.5 Pro, including Veo (currently limited and requires Google’s approval), capable of generating synthetic videos.

Just a day before, OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed AI company, also revealed its GPT-4o model. This model allows for realistic voice conversations within their ChatGPT mobile app. Both companies showcased similar upcoming features, highlighting the rapid advancements in AI technology.

During an interview with CNBC, Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed concerns about OpenAI, potentially using YouTube content to train their video-generating AI model – Sora.

This follows uncertainty from OpenAI’s technology chief regarding YouTube data being used for training the “Sora” model. Some reports suggest OpenAI might have transcribed a massive amount of YouTube content. Several others have also accused OpenAI of using copyrighted materials like news articles to train the AI models.

“Look, I think it’s a question for them to answer,” Pichai said. “I don’t have anything to add. We do have clear terms of service. And so, you know, I think normally in these things we engage with companies and make sure they understand our terms of service. And we’ll sort it out.”

There have been rumors about Apple potentially adding Gemini to iPhones, but it’s not confirmed yet. We could see something in June 2024 at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Google and Apple have a history of successful partnerships, despite being major competitors in the same industry. A legal case in November 2023 revealed that Google shared 36% of its search advertising revenue generated through Apple’s Safari browser with Apple.

“We have focused on delivering great experiences for the Apple ecosystem,” Pichai said. “It is something we take very seriously and I’m confident — we have many ways to make sure our products are accessible. We see that today, AI Overviews have been a popular feature on iOS when we have tested, and so we’ll continue — including Gemini. We’ll continue working to bring that there.”
