Samsung bets on NVIDIA Omniverse to fade TSMC’s edge

Samsung reportedly plans to begin the application of NVIDIA Omniverse (digital twin) technology to its semiconductor fabs from 2025 to better compete with TSMC.

The application of NVIDIA’s digital twin tech can significantly reduce the number of defective products. It creates a virtual replica of a real-world object in a digital space and then uses AI to analyze and predict various situations.

The Korean tech giant will participate in NVIDIA GTC 2024 to present its digital twin technology and application methods. A semiconductor factory based on the NVIDIA digital twin platform, Omniverse, will be presented.

The tech that Samsung is preparing will likely be the world’s first factory digital twin platform that can reach level 5, the highest level of smart factories. This is expected to enable defect prevention and AI process analysis.

TrendForce reported that TSMC’s foundry market share was 59% and Samsung’s was 11% last year. The gap could widen to 62% for TSMC and 10% for Samsung this year.
