Gemini Nano AI: Galaxy S24 In, Pixel 8 Out
Back in December, Google launched Gemini; its largest and most capable AI model. Google revealed Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone built for Gemini Nano, but the Pixel 8 left behind Samsung’s Galaxy S24.
Gemini Nano, the smallest version of the Gemini model family, can be executed on-device on high-end Android smartphones starting with Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung S24 Series.
During The Android Show, Terence Zhang, a Developer Relations engineer at Google, reiterated that the Pixel 8 is not eligible for Gemini Nano AI due to some hardware limitations, but the Galaxy S24 is.
Pixel 8 series uses Tensor G3 chipset based on Galaxy S24’s Exynos 2400 chipset manufactured by Samsung. Galaxy S24 starts at 8GB RAM, the same as Pixel 8, but the former is capable of running Gemini Nano.
After the Gemini AI’s debut, Pixel 8 users were hoping to be listed alongside the Pro models. However, Google seems to have no plans to offer its AI Powerhouse – Gemini AI – to the non-Pro model of the Pixel 8 lineup.
Gemini Nano comes with several advantages by design, helping prevent sensitive data from leaving the phone, as well as offering the ability to use features without a network connection.
Gemini Nano won't be coming to the Pixel 8 because of "some hardware limitations" but will be coming to more high-end devices in the near future according to Terence Zhang, a Developer Relations engineer at Google, during #TheAndroidShow.
