Apple acquired Canada-based AI startup DarwinAI and shifted a dozen employees to its AI division reports BloombergNews. The report states that Apple bought this startup earlier this year, as part of implementing AI features into its devices.

Google Pixel 8 series is equipped with On-device and Generative AI capabilities. Samsung also equipped its Galaxy S24 series with Galaxy AI, derived from Gemini Nano. Meanwhile, Apple has been slower in rolling out generative AI to its mobile products.

Bloomberg also reported that Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build DarwinAI’s business, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the deal.

To be noted, DarwinAI has developed AI technology for visually inspecting components during the manufacturing process and serves customers in a range of industries, the same source added.
