Google is now widely rolling out a new Android Photopicker which can also access the Google Photos library in the cloud. The company announced this upgrade last month, with the initial rollout has also begun at that time.

Following the update, Android Photopicker now has access to your backed-up (cloud) photos in Google Photos. It will help you pick a photo whenever required even without switching between supported or designated apps.

  • “Backed-up photos, also known as ‘cloud photos,’ will now be merged with your local ones in the photo picker, eliminating the need to switch between apps.”

On the first use, Android will show a “Backed up photos now included” banner explaining the new capability: “You can select photos from Google Photos account example@gmail.com.”

Hitting the hamburger menu will display a new “Cloud media app” settings page. Local Google Photos may remain the first preference, while you can choose “None” to get back to the previous local behavior.
