Google’s Gemini AI coming to Android tablets
Google is working to expand Gemini AI to Android tablets. In a Google app’s teardown by 9to5Google, code strings revealed the company’s plans to bring Gemini AI to Android tablets.
Android phones require users to pick between Google Assistant and Gemini AI when installed, that’s not the same case with tablets. Gemini AI on Pixel Tablet could be used alongside Google Assistant, 9to5Google’s teardown states.
These references are found in the Google app’s code:
- Gemini handles tasks on your tablet
- When Gemini is the digital assistant on this tablet, hosted by the Google app, it can access certain system permissions and data, like dialer, call and message logs, and contacts (to help you keep in touch), installed apps like Clock (to control alarms and timers), and screen content (to help you act on it).
- Gemini is still learning, so Google Assistant may help with some tasks. Some capabilities from Assistant may not be supported.
- If “Hey Google” and Voice Match are on in Settings, you can talk to it or Google Assistant (whichever one is active) hands-free. If “Hey Google” and Voice Match are on in Settings, you can talk to it or Google Assistant (whichever one is active) hands-free.
Gemini for tablets will be hosted inside the Google app, leaving confusion about whether there will be a standalone app. Being sold as an Assistant-powered smart display, the Pixel tablet might let users access both Gemini and Assistant together.
