Android 15’s peak refresh rate toggle won’t work for most games

Android 15 will bring a new developer options toggle to lift refresh rate restriction from games. However, the source who discovered this feature now revealed that the peak refresh rate hack won’t work for most games.

Android expert MishaalRahman reports that this feature is intended to cover the scenario where a game hasn’t set its own desired frame rate via the setFrameRate() API.

Simply put, games that don’t have their own desired frame rate will make use of Android 15’s default frame rate feature. As most games specify a frame rate, there likely aren’t many games out there that this feature will work on.

“I was able to get Minecraft: Pocket Edition running at 120fps on my Pixel 8 Pro with this feature enabled, but that’s only because the game seems to oddly be locked to 60fps on the two Pixels I tested, even though it runs just fine at 120fps on every other device I tried.” – MishaalRahman.

Codes in AOSP indicate that this feature will be used by Android’s Game Manager service. There is a possibility that a more prominent user-facing toggle will be added to Android’s Game Dashboard in the future.
