Android 15 to bring Windows-inspired apps quarantine feature

Google is working to further solidify Android’s protection against malicious & misbehaving apps with a new quarantine feature. Android 15 will bring a new feature to Pixel devices to protect users from misbehaving apps.

Android 15 could come with Windows OS-inspired quarantine features to protect the system from harmful apps. When quarantined, apps in Android will behave differently than non-quarantined apps.

Windows entirely hides suspicious apps that are quarantined by the anti-virus. However, Android’s app quarantine will not follow the same suite, with the app being visible on the home screen, but restrictions will be imposed.

Android Authority notes a few restrictions:

  • Notifications from it won’t be shown
  • All its windows will be hidden, and already-started activities will be stopped
  • It won’t be able to ring the device
  • Its services can’t be queried by other apps (though its activities can)
  • It can’t be bound to or receive broadcasts from the system or other apps
  • It can’t be resolved (i.e., it won’t show up in the intent disambiguation dialog)

You may have disabled some apps that can’t be uninstalled from your smartphone. Similarly, the quarantining will work, however, the icon won’t disappear from the app screen and home screen.

This feature is reportedly in the works since November (Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1). There’s no authentic input on when Google will make it official. Notably, Google swiftly ditched the developer page for “Quarantined Apps.”
