New Android 15 feature will show health of your phone’s storage

Google is developing a new feature for Android 15 that will display the health of your phone’s storage chip. The most recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy flagships offer up to 7 years of software update support.

The phone needs to maintain its hardware components as the software support gets longer. Google would bring a fruitful feature to Android 15, showing the health of your phone’s storage chip.

Android lacks iOS-like native battery health feature, but Google is exploring beyond. Storage chip is way more important than a phone’s battery as the battery can be replaced but a damaged storage chip will remove all the data.

A commit to AOSP sets up work for a new API in Android for displaying the health of a storage chip. When deployed, the feature will display the health of the chip based on indicators from UFS chips as a percentage.

At present, it isn’t a part of Android, however, Google is constantly developing this feature. Notably, the OS already collects this data so this API would simply surface it to apps such as the Settings menu.

There’s no clearance on the release of this feature by Google. However, Pixel users should get it with the Android 15 upgrade, which is set to release sometime in October this year.
