GIF sent from iPhones turning distorted on Google Messages for Android

Google Messages for Android is turning GIF distorted if sent from iPhones. Some users reported having problems with Android’s messages app as it is reportedly turning GIFs into still images with missing dots/pixels throughout.

In particular, Google’s Pixel and Samsung’s Galaxy devices are affected by the problem. Whenever a GIF is sent by an iPhone user over SMS/MMS, it gets distorted, converting to still images with missing dots/pixels throughout.

It’s worth noting that it is not a widespread issue as a limited number of consumers are facing this problem. Pay attention, not every iPhone-Android conversation is impacted by a distorted GIF bug.

It is assumed that iOS may have been compressing and resizing the GIF before sending. This functionality may have been buggy, resulting in distorted GIFs on Google Messages for Android.

Apple is also working to adopt the RCS messaging feature on iMessage. It is expected to roll out later this year, with some related announcements that might be made at the WWDC 2024 event.
