Google Contacts to add end-to-end encryption verification across apps
Google seems to be readying the Contacts app to help users verify end-to-end encryption across apps. The company is apparently creating a similar feature seen in Apple iOS called Contact Key Verification.
With the first Android 15 Beta, Google debuted E2eeContactKeysManager API. This API is said to facilitate end-to-end encryption in apps by providing an “OS-level API for the storage of cryptographic public keys.”
Google Play Services will handle the Contact Keys functionality. In the latest development, AndroidAuthority spotted three activities within the Play Services, which are as follows:
- One for onboarding
- One for showing the QR code
- One for scanning the QR code.
Besides, strings suggest that Contact Keys will rely on the Contacts app for UX. Using it, users will be able to confirm all their E2E apps are encrypted by scanning the QR code present on the other person’s Google Contacts app.
