Gemini now supports Google Assistant routines on Android

The Gemini mobile app has introduced a new feature that allows users to trigger Google Assistant Routines directly on Android devices. Since its launch in February, this functionality wasn’t available, meaning users couldn’t start Routines using Gemini on their Android phones. Previously, shortcuts to begin a Routine or those attached to alarms in the Clock app were non-functional.
Now, with this update, you can simply say “start [routine]” to activate Google Assistant within the Gemini app and run your desired Routine. It’s important to note that typing a command to trigger a Routine still doesn’t work. However, Google has mentioned that “not all starters or actions are supported when you use a Routine with Gemini.”
If Gemini doesn’t support a particular action, it will skip that part of the Routine. Some of the unsupported features include:
- Starters: Activating Routines through typed commands, starting them at specific times like sunrise or sunset, starting them based on location, or using shortcuts from the home screen.
- Actions: Playing music, radio, or podcasts, sharing fitness and sleep data, or sharing poems and quotes.
To verify if this feature is available on your device, you can navigate to Gemini Settings > Google Assistant features in Gemini > Routines (found at the bottom of the menu).
Currently, the list of unsupported features in Gemini includes Interpreter mode and media services like podcasts, news, radio stations, and third-party music providers.
