Pixel 9 enhances RCS transfer for seamless messaging migration
Key Points:
- Full RCS Transfer: Maintains all message details including media and reactions.
- Transfer Methods: Supported via cable or Wi-Fi, not cloud restore.
- Update Required: Ensure Google Messages is up-to-date on your old device.
The Pixel 9 introduces a major improvement in transferring your message history with a complete RCS (Rich Communication Services) transfer. This update preserves all aspects of your conversations, such as media, audio, reactions, and other metadata, instead of converting them to SMS/MMS.
Currently, the transfer can only be done using a USB-C cable or Wi-Fi. Cloud-based restores are still limited. To ensure a smooth transfer, make sure Google Messages on your old device is updated to the latest version. With this setup, your message threads will be replicated exactly as they were on your previous phone.
The Pixel 9’s new setup process involves rebuilding the Messages transfer system for greater reliability and completeness. This upgrade also includes improvements in transferring system settings, permissions, notification preferences, and app logins. For some carriers, eSIM transfer is also supported.
Additionally, a new “Back up or copy data” menu in Settings allows you to transfer data after initial setup. Google has also introduced a faster “Express” setup option, which copies media not saved to Google Photos in its original quality.
