Texting 911 gets a big upgrade on Android phones
In emergencies, calling 911 isn’t always the best option. Sometimes, you might need to reach out quietly, which is where texting 911 can be useful. However, sending texts with just basic SMS can be quite restrictive. This is where RCS, or Rich Communication Services, steps in to make a big difference.
The next big update for texting 911 on Android is set to introduce RCS features. Last year, Google teamed up with RapidSOS to modernize 911 call centers in the US, making them ready for RCS text messages. With this upgrade, people can check if their message was received, send clear photos or videos, and pinpoint their exact location much more accurately.
Updating the call centers is just one part of the plan. The other part involves making sure this works on popular Android phones. Google has now included a new setting in their latest Google Messages app update, version 20250129, which turns on RCS for texting 911.
Since Google promised this feature would roll out during winter, it looks like we’re right on schedule for Android users to start using it. We’ll keep you posted as more details come in.
