Google’s new AI search feature coming to Pixel phones

Google is taking a big step to keep its search engine up to date by adding a special AI search feature. This new feature, called “AI Mode,” will make searching on your Pixel phone easier and more like talking to a friend.

Google wants to match the way people interact with newer AI chatbots like its own Gemini. AI Mode will help you get quick summaries of what you’re looking for with the help of AI. Right now, this feature is only being tested by Google workers, but we’ve seen a sneak peek thanks to some leaks.

The AI Mode uses a special version of Google’s Gemini AI, which is good at understanding and answering complex questions. For example, you could ask for advice or compare different things. Plus, you can ask more questions about the same topic without starting over.

On computers, you’ll see a new “AI Mode” button next to usual options like Images or News. You’ll get an AI-made answer right away when you click it instead of a list of links. There will still be links, but they won’t be the main focus. At the bottom, there’s a place for you to type in more questions.

For Android phones, especially Pixels, you won’t need to open the full app to switch to AI Mode. There will be a quick switch in the Google Search app and even a shortcut you can put right on your home screen.

To make this work on Pixel phones, Google is updating the search widget on the home screen. They’re adding a new AI Mode icon in the latest Android 16 beta, which will sit right on the search bar. We don’t know exactly when AI Mode will be available for everyone, but it could be sometime this year. Are you excited to try out this new way of searching? Share your thoughts in the comments!
