Gemini now lets free users upload files, plus deep research hits Google Workspace
Google shared some exciting news today: free Gemini users can now upload and work with documents! This feature began rolling out last week and is available on the web, Android, and iOS apps. Back in May, only Gemini Advanced subscribers could upload files. Now, everyone with a free account can add multiple Google Docs, PDFs, and Word files using Gemini 2.0 Flash. You can upload directly from your phone or computer or pick files from Google Drive. Once uploaded, you can ask for simple summaries, personal tips, or useful ideas based on your files.
On Android, this update brings cool options like “Ask about this PDF” in the Files by Google app and “Talk Like about this” on Pixel 9 and Galaxy S24/S25 phones. However, free users can’t upload spreadsheets or code files yet—that’s still just for paid Advanced users. Google didn’t say how many documents free users can upload at once, but paid users can handle up to 1 million tokens.
To try it, just hit the ‘plus’ button in the Gemini search bar. You’ll see new options like Files and Drive alongside Camera and Gallery. On the business side, Google is also bringing Gemini Deep Research to Google Workspace plans with Gemini Advanced. This tool is perfect for digging into big topics. For example:
- Industry trends: Learn about things like eco-friendly batteries for a clean tech project.
- Competitor info: Find out about local businesses to pick the best spot for your shop.
- Customer prep: Build a report on a client’s products or team before a sales meeting.
- School projects: Teachers can create reports for lessons or grants by scanning tons of articles.
Plus, Workspace users with Advanced access can now choose between Gemini models like 2.0 Flash (great for quick tasks) and 2.0 Pro Experimental (for tougher jobs). This rollout starts today and will finish up in the next few weeks. Mobile app support for Deep Research is coming soon too! With these updates, Gemini is making it easier for everyone—free or paid—to get more done.
